Wild Pigs

Steph was wondering about Wild Pigs. They are all over the southwest. We have them in the yard all the time. Mostly they are on the desert but they are spreading up into the mountains too. When we were up panning last we saw some but they were too fast to get pics of. We get deer, cattle and of course lots of dogs here in the yard as well. One must have a garden fenced if you want to keep it. Don't fence the flowers so some will get eaten. Here is a web site where you can learn more about these wild pigs.

Jake when you get a lot of fine gold in black sand, I will tell you how Grandpa Prescott extracted the gold from it.

Yeah, no matter how careful I am I always suck up a tiny bit of black sand with my gold when I use an eyedropper. Over many times of sucking up tiny bits of gold I collected quite a bit of black sand too. So in my little vial I have probably about 60 percent gold and 40 percent black sand. I would definitely appreciate any pointers.

COOL!! I have heard of peccaries, but only in zoos. I can't believe they are just running around everywhere!! Do you hear them snorting and squealing? They sound kind of dangerous if you encounter them. I will probably get way excited if I make it down there and see one...Jeannine will tell you about when I saw the bear at the cabin!!! I love seeing wildlife in its natural state.

Jake; I save some of my sand with a snifter bottle but mostly I pan the stuff down to where I can just see the gold is there and then put all the stuff in the pan into a small bucket. Saves a lot of time this way and you can get a lot more panning done if you don't take the time right then to get it all the way down to where there is only a little black sand left to snifter up. You can take the bucket home and do it there or just keep adding to it like I do till I really get some collected. After you finally decide to work it all down then you can put the fines in a glass plate like a glass pie plate. add an inch of water to it then place a strong magnet in a zip-loc bag and hold it just above the water so the black sand will jump up to it. Usually the gold will stay in the plate but sometimes real fine stuff sticks to it so don't throw it away just yet.If you see any fine gold floating then add a drop of detergent to the water. Anyway hold the bag with magnet over another plate and peel the bag off the magnet so the black sand will fall into the plate. Save in a quart jar.If you still have any gold in it there is a way to get it out with mercury. When you get a quqrt I will tell you how Grandpa did it. If you don't have a strong magnet then let me know and I'll put a couple in with the sucker tube when I send it.

Stef; When the pigs are in the yard, you don't always hear them. They make the security lights come on then you can see them if you look out fast enough. Sometimes they come just about dawn then the lights don't come on. If they get into a fight as to who gets what to eat first, then they really make a noise. Sometimes the neighbors dogs raise hell when they come close to their fence. The cayotes are what makes all the noise. I swear it sounds like they are right by the window howling. I don't hear the deer but I hear the cows stomping thru the flower bed just outside my window. The cactus we put out there keeps them from coming too close.
Yes I still hang my clothes outside. I like the smell much better. Especially the sheets and cases. The wind blows most of the time and they dry in an hour or so.
